FAQS
WHAT IS AN END OF LIFE DOULA?
End of life doulas are trained to offer personalized support to individuals and families before, during and after death. We are able to give families the attention, knowledge and compassion to help prepare you for and support you during the dying process. End of life doulas (sometimes referred to as death doulas) provide the non-medical care and support to individuals and their loved ones during a very stressful time.
ARE END OF LIFE DOULAS TRAINED?
Yes! There are many courses to train end of life doulas. I received my training from Alua Arthur at Going with Grace. Alua has become one of the leading death doulas in the country teaching new doulas and educating on end of life practices around the world.
ARE END OF LIFE DOULAS LICENSED?
There is not currently a professional organization to license end of life doulas in the United States, however, National End of Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) does recognize trained doulas. I have completed the NEDA proficiency exam and am recognized in the NEDA organization.
WHY DO I NEED AN END OF LIFE DOULA?
One thing’s for sure in this life… we’re all going to die. But death is new to all of us. Like the birthing doulas that help newborns transition into this world, end of life doulas can help people of any age transition out of the physical world. Allowing someone to hold the space, walk beside you and explore the intricacies of death is just what we do. Even if you’ve experienced a death before, each loss is different and there are aspects that will be new to you. I have found that fear often comes from the unknown; an end of life doula is the perfect opportunity to explore these fears and make preparations at any age or stage.
